The Hydrogen sulfide is a compound that is widely known for its distinct rotten egg or sulphur odour.
It is a colourless, flammable gas that occurs naturally in gases from swamps and stagnant pools of water, volcanoes, hot springs.
Hydrogen sulfide is also a waste product of many industrial processes and from municipal sewers and sewage treatment plants worldwide.
The production of Hydrogen sulfide is a result of a process called anaerobic digestion.
That is a breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen in the process.
In borehole water the Hydrogen sulfide is commonly formed by sulphate reducing bacteria.
Borehole water naturally contains minerals of sulphate picked up from rock formations and soil.
The Sulphur reducing bacteria can change sulphates in the borehole water to Hydrogen sulfide gas.
Hydrogen sulfide in borehole water can be caused simply by the decay of organic matter like roots of trees.
The taste of the water may also be affected.
When left untreated, Hydrogen sulfide can corrode galvanized and copper pipes in the long run.
This can also tarnish silver and leave yellow or black stains on bathroom fixtures like the shower or bath.
While the amount of Hydrogen sulfide typically found in most household water supplies is not high enough to pose any serious health risks.
Nausea can occur due to the foul smell.

Treatment of Hydrogen sulfide in borehole water.

Small amounts of the gas can be handled by activated carbon.
When you have low to moderate amounts of Hydrogen sulfide in your borehole water, the gas can be converted to elemental sulphur and then filtered out by using an oxidizing filter system.
Higher amounts of Hydrogen sulfide may require more advanced treatment to eliminate it.
Open the tank for the sulphide to evaporate.

Rotten egg smell in hot water.

Take note that if the rotten egg smell is only present in the hot water and not in the cold water.
It could be that the problem lies in the hot water heater.
Geysers or hot water tanks have an anode rod, which is in place to prevent corrosion to the tank or geyser.
If anaerobic bacteria are present in the borehole water.
The bacteria can use the electrons produced due to the corrosion of the anode rod in the tank or geyser.
That could be an energy source to produce Hydrogen sulfide.
To solve this problem is to switch out the anode rod in the tank.
To kill the bacteria you just turning the temperature up, on the hot water tank for a short period of time.
Please remember to turn the temperature back down and then drain the tank.
If not scalding may occur.
